Organic market development by know how and experience exchange – Experiences from the Organic Marketing Forum in Warsaw

    Dear Mr. Liebing,

Thank you for the ongoing discussion and information exchange about an organic processing and trade conference in Romania. We are happy to share our point of view on such a project and to offer our readiness for cooperation with this letter:

The Organic Marketing Forum (OMF – www.organic-marketing-forum.org) is a conference on organic processing and trade with accompanied organic food exhibition. It takes place in Warsaw in May and will do so on the 24th and 25th of May 2009 for the 4th time. With expected 450 participants from 35 countries in 2009 the OMF is the most important meeting for the organic market in Central and Eastern Europe. The OMF started in 2006 with 120 participants from 11 countries and had 330 participants from 30 countries in 2008. Thus it grew with the market and with the demand for information and know how of the companies in Poland and the other European countries.

The OMF is organised and owned by EkoConnect – International Centre of Organic Agriculture of Central and Eastern Europe. We are happy to have the Organic Retailers Association, the Polish farmers association Ekoland and the Polish agricultural advising centre CDR as partners in this project. We are also happy that the Polish Ministry for Agriculture as well as the IFOAM EU Group are the patrons of the OMF.

After having worked for about 15 years with organic companies in CEE and more than 3 years in organising the international meeting OMF, we are convinced that the get together of committed people and companies as well as know how exchange of key actors, belong to the most important measures for

the development of the organic sector in CEE countries. During our work with organic companies in Poland and the new EU member states, we could detect the following key developments:
    - the number of organic processors went up from 55 in 2004 to about 240 in 2008. (90 in 2005, 207 in 2007)
    - A new umbrella brand for organic products was set up in Poland (named “O!EKO”) which sells its products in supermarket chains
    - The association for Polish organic processors was founded (named Polska Ekologia)
    - Several export and import activities started between Poland and Germany and other countries

What could a meeting of organic processors and traders mean for Romania? From our perspective, this meeting could
    - lead to a much better cooperation of the organic companies of the different regions of Romania
    - help to develop the local organic market
    - connect the Romanian processors and farmer with neighbour countries
    - make a big positive difference in the supply of Romanian companies with updated organic market and management information and know how.

From the experiences of the OMF in Poland, for Romania we would recommend:
    - put the emphasis on know how and information transfer, rather than business contacts,
    - put the emphasis on what is needed for Romania, rather than what is needed in South East Europe,
    - include topics for farmers, because probably many advisors and multipliers will attend,
    - have speaker from Romania and from other East and West European countries and
    - let all speaker end up with “recommendations for Romania” so that they have to focus on the special conditions and the future steps in Romania.

EkoConnect is ready to support an organic meeting project in Romania 2009. If the established good reputation of the OMF should be used to bring interesting company speaker and organic traders to Romania, EkoConnect is also ready to conduct an “OMF-Romania” project in cooperation with ORA and local partners.

    Chairman

Deci, eu zic ca dupa infiintare trebuie sa avem o discutie serioasa despre implicarea noastra in organizarea sau coorganizarea unor evenimente legate de Agricultura Ecologica
    Cu stima
